Come find out about two new novels just published by veteran English teacher, Gayle Martelles. The Spirit of Mango House is a rain forest adventure set in the plantation days of 1950s Hawaii which follows the struggles of twelve-year-old Keoki Salcedo, grandson of Puerto Rican immigrants, as he tries to protect his grandmother and his home from Malo, the brutal luna responsible for the death of Keoki’s parents. The Mystery of Phantom Bluff is a middle school mystery with a “Nancy Drew” flavor set in present day Oregon. When a valuable canoe is stolen, twelve-year-old Beatrice “Bird” Cagge and her partner Matt Porre, a mysterious thirteen-year-old boy from Hawaii, are determined to solve the case--a resolve which leads them into the dangerous secrets of Phantom Bluff. In this workshop, Gayle will give an overview of both books, as well as teaching resources for utilizing her novels in a middle school classroom.
