Ridge to Reef - Maui Coral Reef Ecology

Will provide participants with background on coral reef ecology, specifically pertaining to Maui, and issues facing this dwindling resource. Activities will be provided to participants that can be done in class as well as a PowerPoint and local community resources that will add in field study development.

The Reading Social Network: How to Build Virtual Reading Communities to Acknowledge, Ecncourage and Celebrate Reading

In a world overflowing with movies, television, social networks, video games, and multimedia, the art of reading is being crowded out our discretionary time. In this presentation, discover how to use technology to create a virtual reading community that honors, encourages, and celebrates books. Using Amazon’s Shelfari as a platform, the presenter will share the virtual reading community he has built, and help you to create your own virtual reading community. With this platform, teachers and students will be able to track, share, review, and build their digital bookshelves. If you want to build excitement around reading in your classrooms, especially in Grades 6 through 12, this is the session for you.

Roadside Geology of Maui

Participants will be provided with basic information about the formation of the Hawaiian Islands as well as field study resources developed by Carrie DeMott and Dr. Julia Hammer from UH Manoa. Teachers will leave with field study manuals for unit development and a list of resources to provide their students with a safe, hands-on field study that examines the geology and formation of Maui.
