Dr. Philippe L. Gross is currently a Psychology Instructor at Kapi‘olani Community College and occasionally also teaches workshops on meditation, photography, and the art of seeing. Dr. Gross’s interest in meditation and self-hypnosis began in 1983, while he was still in Switzerland. He moved to Honolulu in 1985 and earned a doctoral degree in psychology at the University of Hawai‘i in 1996. His doctoral work combined two passions, photography and Taoism, which lead to a best-selling book: The Tao of Photography: Seeing beyond Seeing—published in 2001 by Ten Speed Press and translated into Chinese in 2013. He is also the former Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies, an interdisciplinary journal devoted to studies of higher consciousness. From 2001 to 2010, Dr. Gross was a Research Psychologist at the Mental Health Services Research Evaluation and Training Program of the University of Hawai‘i and worked in close collaboration with the Adult Mental Health Division (AMHD).
