Robert Landau

HAIS
Executive Director

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California I moved abroad for the first time at the age of one and have been captivated with a global perspective my whole life. For the past 40 years I have worked as a teacher, principal and head of school in Switzerland, Indonesia, Czech Republic, China, Cambodia, and Singapore. For 10 months, in 1998-99 I became the Founding Director of the first international charter school in Monterey, CA.

Progressive and experiential education has always been important to me as I had the privilege to attend the UCLA Lab School in Los Angeles where the world renown Dr. Madeline Hunter was my principal. With the current popularity of Project Based Learning, it feels like “deja vu” all over again!

I have had the honor and privilege to serve on numerous association boards - most recently as President of the Academy for International School Heads. I have also served on countless accreditation teams. My most precious and memorable experience took place in Cambodia where I had the honor of working at the Liger Learning Center in Cambodia. At Liger we selected 50 disadvantage yet promising students. I created an interesting curriculum framework that I hope to share with interested schools. Most recently, I became the founder and board chair of Cambodia’s Future Foundation. Working in the NGO and foundation world certainly changed my life.

Married to Kate (from the Channel Islands in the UK) we have two grown boys, Matthew (19) and Sean (26). My hobbies include music, drama, squash, softball, scuba diving, and community service.
